Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. Matthew 1:17 NIV

This genealogy listing was an important message to the Jewish leaders and people. Family lineage, especially introducing someone from a royal family, verified and authenticated their authority, thus the nations future.
The big point Matthew introduces is Jesus; Israel’s and the worlds Messiah King. Interesting to note and not overlook is Matthews inclusion of “the exile.” The exile would bring back some horrific, painful memories, but also an instilled hope of their coming Messiah King!
Following the genealogy, Matthew introduces, informs and instructs the Jews (and others) of the pivotal & foundational truth; Jesus has come, Immanuel!
- This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about V18
- an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David V20
- All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet [Isaiah 7:14]: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). V22-23
Jesus’ birth is connected to …the son of David, taking place to fulfill a specific prophetic word. This speaks LOUDLY to the Jews, awaiting a Messiah-King while under Roman rule.

AM I CURIOUS ENOUGH?
In my Bible readings, I usually speed read, if I read at all – any genealogies listed. Today I thought, if MY GENEALOGY and lineage were recorded somewhere, I would be intensely engaged. I would study that thing with passion and curiosity.
HIS LIFE. HIS LINEAGE.
My simple, and seriously time-convicting challenge is: Would I dare make and spend more time, deeply & intimately studying God’s Word? My Messiah-King’s life and lineage is worth it right!!??
TOO MUCH GOING ON. TOO MUCH ON MY MIND.
Sometimes I skim read, speed read…not only genealogies – but the Scriptures in general. Depending on what I need to accomplish on my to do list, I partition some time for Jesus and His Word. And when I get around to reading His Word, I fall into the “skim-speed reading” trap. Rush, rush, rush! Hurry, hurry, hurry!
HIS RACE + NICE PACE = REST IN JESUS!
I’m so thankful for the time God affords me to spend in rest with Him. The pace of life, my to do’s list, goals, desires…are being changed! Thank you Jesus! I do find myself resting in Jesus more. Meditating and studying the Scriptures more. Ahhhhhhhh! The balance feels so good, and I’m super grateful for God’s conviction, guidance and purposes being accomplished in me – through me.

Thank you Daddie Father, for Your hand upon my life, the generations past and to come. For the sake of Jesus’ lineage, would you continue to reveal Your heart and will to Beckie, Kai, Koa, Malia – and those you call me to serve and shepherd. Thank You for the race and pace in life You have blessed me with. Oh the joy to be brought out of “my exiled past” into Your wonderful love!
