GOD’S SUPER + MY NATURAL = SUPER NATURAL LIFE

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Samuel 17:45 NIV

The contrasting titles, reputations and skill sets of Goliath and David.
Goliath, a champion (v4) and warrior from his youth (v33), the invincible enemy of the Israelites. He taunted the fiercest of Israel’s army and no one would challenge him. A young man, a servant of Saul (v32-33) named David would boldly step up to uphold the name of God. His stark boldness surfaced to uphold God’s name, not his family name, the armies or nations reputation.
Earthly & Natural. Spiritual & Super-Natural.
The natural – sword, spear and javelin would be contrasted with the spiritual – the name of the Lord Almighty. In wars – spears, swords and skilled warriors were feared. But according to David, his trust was in the super-natural, spiritual might of God! He feared God, more than a giant warrior who was trained, skilled and raised to fight from his youth.
The Old Testament Sword & New Testament Sword.
It’s interesting to me that the New Testament symbolizes the sword to the Word of God. It’s the spiritual weapon of choice. We are in the flesh but don’t live according to the flesh – the weapons of our warfare are not carnal or earthly, but divine in power…according to Paul in 2 Cor. 10:3-4.
David the servant warrior. Jesus the Servant Warrior.
And who is the Servant of all servants…the picture of David, a servant of an earthly King? Jesus served, even under earthly rule, authority and order! And He is the Warrior, described in Rev. 19:11-16, leading His heavenly army to final victory!

How do I develop such a fearless, selfless, warrior like trust and confidence in my life – like David taking on Goliath?
Who is my Goliath? Identify him!
My Goliath could represent a huge battle against an enemy. That enemy needs to be identified. The enemy of trusting in skill, talent, reputation, past successes or experiences. Maybe the enemy is connected to a pride in being respected & revered? Do I have taunting attributes boasting in anything of myself?
Knowing how to wield my new Sword.
I’m so grateful to be experiencing the mentoring of the Holy Spirit, in the Word of God – my spiritual sword. I’m growing in knowing and studying and using the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Eph. 6:17).
Developing Confidence and Trust.
1 Sam. 17:15 cites David’s commitment to shepherding his sheep. With this responsibility came experience to fight off bears and lions, even with his bare hands (v34-37).
God will use the victories, battles and experiences of my past, to build confidence and trust in WHO HE IS, and WHAT HE CAN DO, through simple, daily obedience. So the heart-felt experiences and ministry, serving the “sheep” or common people in my past – will be used of God, to build a faith, trust and confidence in God’s provision and ability – not mine!
