“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
John 4:23-24 NIV
What does it mean to worship God in spirit and truth?
In John’s Gospel, to worship in spirit and truth is to worship God through Jesus (the Truth) in the power of the Holy Spirit (Spirit), and from our inner hearts.
This kind of worship (I don’t think or believe) is from a life or heart that needs to be perfect. For ultimately, none of us obtain perfection in this life. I think, FO’ REAL KINE, that only by the grace of God, through Jesus, that we can worship the Father in spirit and truth.
I believe Spirit worship flows from the depth of our inner hearts, empowered by the Holy Spirit, rather than from outward performance. Truth worship is rooted in our relationship with Jesus—who He is as the Truth—and shaped by the principles God reveals to us in His Word. In this context, Jesus teaches that true worship in spirit and truth is centered on honoring the Father.
It’s the literal place of worship that is significant, but worship from a heart changed and being transformed by Jesus. Songs, lyrics, and music are ways we can worship God, but true worship will be from our hearts (spirit) through a relationship with Jesus (as Truth in our lives).
