“You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.”
1 Thessalonians 1:6 NIV

This Sunday, I will be teaching about God’s will from 1 Thessalonians chapter 5. As we consider the context of the beginning of Paul’s letter to Christ followers who were experiencing persecution and suffering, what do you see in verse 6 that you would like to imitate?

Yet Paul says, “You welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.”

That challenges me. When life gets hard, my natural reaction is to complain or pull back. I want to imitate these believers who received God’s Word with open hearts and found joy in the middle of hardship and suffering.

This tells us something powerful about God’s will. It’s not about everything going our way. It’s about letting the Spirit fill us with joy, hope, and trust in Christ—even when circumstances are tough.

To imitate the Thessalonians is to imitate Jesus Himself. He faced suffering yet trusted the Father and stayed faithful to His mission.

So I ask myself… Where do I need the Spirit’s help today to imitate Jesus? What challenge do I need to surrender to God?

Let’s pray this week that we would grow mānoa in that same spirit of joy so we can imitate the life and heart of Jesus, and live out God’s will no matter the circumstance.
