“One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.”
Psalm 145:4
As people of God, no matter our ages, seasons of life, we need each other, don’t we? There’s something to the older generation sharing stories of their lives — the ups, down, successes and failures. Especially stories that include God — His faithfulness, presence, encouragement, empowering — through all seasons of life.
Lineage and passing down stories were significant for the Jewish people. David wrote to “commend” your works — which means declare or speak highly with a heart of praise and celebration.
“Commend your works to one another” doesn’t just include kūpuna passing along stories, it includes all of us — all generations — interacting, sharing life stories with one another. That’s ‘ohana right?!
The elderly don’t retire from investing in their families and others. All generations don’t retreat from sharing life stories — serving, helping and encouraging one another.
Our greatest legacy is not be what we leave for the next generation but what we leave in them.
I’m encouraging and exhorting us as a church ‘ohana to be more intentional about investing in relationships with each other. We need each other! We need to hear, respect, ponder, receive one another, sharing stories that challenge and encourage us to be and become who God made just to be.
